New Hendra Case in Queensland & Hendra Update

Biosecurity Queensland is managing a case of Hendra virus infection on the tablelands above Cairns, after test results on a deceased horse came back positive for the virus. A private veterinarian attended the sick horse over the weekend. The veterinarian reported clinical signs of ataxia, depression, disorientation, neck muscle fasciculation and recumbency. The veterinarian also reported that the horse had a body temperature of 37.8°C and displayed a rapid deterioration overnight.  The affected property will be quarantined to restrict the movement of horses on and off. Tracing will be a priority to determine what contact the deceased horse had with other animals on the property. EVA Will update you when we receive more facts.

 

HENDRA UPDATE:   Last Thursday (7/7/2011), President Dr Chris Reardon and AVA QLD President Dr Tony Thelander together with AVA Qld EO Amanda Pollard, met with the QLD state minister for Agriculture, Mr Tim Mulherin, to discuss member issues relating to Hendra Virus. Issues raised at the meeting were a scheme to reimburse vets performing surveillance work on suspect and exclusion case of Hendra Virus, vaccination roll out, stall side testing, serology of HeV in the horse population and awareness package for veterinarians to reduce their risk of contracting the disease. The minister’s office said that they would reply to their position on serology surveillance and stall side testin, but said they would be unlikely to reimburse vet's cost of PPE, seeing this as 'consumable' cost of a consultation.

In a meeting with Ms Patricia Coward, Principal Adviser (Occupational Health), Hazardous Industries and Chemicals Branch Workplace Health and Safety Queensland we acknowledge the powers of the Work Place and Safety Act 2005, and asked the question why members are being investigated by inspectors so aggressively while an illness had not taken place. Ms Coward reminded members that the department of Workplace Health and Safety have the power to investigate practices in Hendra risk mitigation and would work hard to reduce the incidence of new cases.

EVA's continued hard work on Hendra with Government is having some positive results, with Qld Premier Anna Bligh announcing a new interstate task force addressing Hendra Virus. The task force will be headed by CSIRO’s Dr Martin Jeggo and will include representatives from QLD and NSW Biosecurity. The EVA has written to the Premiers’ of Queensland and NSW seeking permission to be part of the task force.
